JOSEPH CARLEBACH INSTITUTE

For Research into Religious Jewish Thought in Germany

The Joseph Carlebach Institute was established in March 1992 in memory of Chief Rabbi Dr. Joseph Zvi Carlebach [1883-1942], a prominent leader of German and European Jewry before and during the Holocaust. The JCI has received international acclaim for its academic and public activities, research projects, and publications in the fields of Jewish thought and education.
JCI Archive collections were established by the Institute's founder, Prof. Dr. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach Z"L [1922-2020], during her approximately 40 years of academic work. The JCI Digital Archive project seeks to enhance access to these cultural treasures and historical documents for the public.

FEATURED COLLECTIONS

JCI RESEARCH ARCHIVE

The JCI Archive collections were established by the Institute's founder, Prof. Dr. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, over approximately 50 years of her academic research and teaching activities. The holdings include a wide range of historical documents, personal papers, photographs, publications and press clippings. These resources, available in English, Hebrew, and German, document the administrative history of the Joseph Carlebach Institute from its inception in March 1992 to 2015.

RABBI DR. JOSEPH Z. CARLEBACH COLLECTION

Joseph Zvi Carlebach was born in Lubeck into an Orthodox rabbinic family. He served as the Director of the Talmud Torah school and as Chief Rabbi of the Jewish communities in Hamburg-Altona. The majority of Joseph Carlebach's archive is preserved by the family of his son, Rabbi Shlomo (Peter) Carlebach [1925-2022], in New York. Additionally, the JCI Archive houses a collection of his published works, digital photographs, and personal and family correspondence.

CARLEBACH FAMILY COLLECTION

The collection contains personal and family papers of the Adler-Carlebach rabbinic family from Lubeck, Germany. Most of the materials belong to the Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Carlebach Archive, who immigrated to Israel in March 1936. It includes a diverse array of family papers and a wealth of rabbinic manuscripts, including sermons, diaries, personal papers, and more.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS :: OLD BOOKS, PHOTOGRAPHS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

The JCI Archive and Library collections contain old booklets, periodical articles, and historical photographs, dating from the early 19th century to the present. These materials have been included in the JCI Digital Archive project as special collections and are available for review and research in PDF format.
